On Saturday June 12, the Arts Council of East Orange collaborated with The City and several community organization to host the first ever MACFest, a festival celebration of music, art, and culture. East Orange’s own Vinnie Brown from Grammy Award-winning hip- hop trio Naughty by Nature served as guest host, introducing performances from the George Washington Carver Drill Team, tap-phenom Maurice Chestnut accompanied by Cicely Tyson Students, East Orange YOPAT’s “Empire” Program, a Sidewalk Catwalk Fashion Show hosted by Tyrone Chablis, New Jersey-based Soul Rockers The Band Called FUSE and Global Sensation Vinx.
In addition to dazzling performances, there were activities for aspiring young artists. Dozens of kids participated in a collaborative painting activity, “The Elephant Project” at the Montclair Art Museum Art Truck led by artist Dan Fenelon and special guest collaborator, renowned visual artist Willie Cole. Other activities included the Epic Chalk Art Battle, which was won by artist Taha Abdul Tawwab X.
One unexpected performers took festival-goers by surprise– flash mob dance to megahit “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.
Overall, the event was a fascinating display of the culture, and a fitting celebration for a city with an esteemed cultural heritage, and many notable residents, from the late Whitney Houston to Power star Naturi Naughton.
